Northern FCU History

Northern Federal Credit Union was founded in 1955 by a group of New York Air Brake employees interested in creating a place where they and fellow employees could save and borrow money safely, confidentially, and at fair rates of interest.

In 1982, the credit union became NYAB/Tri County FCU after expanding its charter to include the employees and officials of the 25 school districts which made up the North Country Coordinating Council of Teachers. In 1996, the credit union changed its name to Northern Federal Credit Union to reflect its growth in Northern New York.

Currently, Northern Federal Credit Union is a multi-employer Credit Union serving over 185 businesses, organizations, medical facilities, school districts and municipalities throughout the North Country.
